Thermoplastic marking is a solid material heated to around 180 °C and screeded or sprayed onto the road, where it cools within minutes into a thick, hard-wearing line. At roughly 2–3 mm thick it lasts many times longer than ordinary road paint under traffic.
Glass beads are dropped onto the surface while it is still molten and become permanently anchored. They retro-reflect headlight beams straight back at the driver, which is what makes the line visible at night and in rain.

The surface is swept and, where needed, wire-brushed or blown clean. Marking will not bond to dust or loose material.
Lines are set out and pre-marked to the approved drawing, then masked where sharp edges are required.
Tack primer is applied on concrete and on aged, polished asphalt.
The compound is melted in a pre-heater and screeded or sprayed to the specified thickness and width.
Glass beads are dropped immediately onto the molten surface, and the road is reopened once the line has set hard.
